Microalgae Starter Disk
Want to start your culture from the beginning? You can create your own live phytoplankton culture as a primary food source in aquatic environments. The phytoplankton cells contained on these disks will remain alive for up to 8 months or longer, if stored in a dark, cool location with the seal intact. Each disk contains approximately one billion live cells, cultured on nutrient agar. By culturing directly from a Petri Dish, you can be assured that you have only your chosen species, and not a blend of various types of microalgae.
The genus Tetraselmis, extremely popular with reef hobbyists, promotes tremendous growth in all zooplankton organisms, corals, invertebrates, and other filter feeder livestock. Tetraselmis is a saltwater-only microalgae.
Nannochloropsis is a beneficial micro algae found throughout the world’s oceans. The genus Nannochloropsis Oculata is widely accepted as the standard for reef keeping aquarists to promote the growth and vibrancy of many corals, invertebrates, and other filter feeder livestock.
This product includes 1 sealed disk containing the species of your choice as well as (2) sterile swabs for transferring cells to starter vessel.

The discs i purchased this time weren't up to snuff this time. The Nanno hasn't done a thing in a week and the Tetra has barely begun. I was home upon delivery and used sterile vessels and equipment as I have for years. Very disappointed. The quality I've grown to expect from Mercer's just wasn't there this time.
Mercer of Montana does not disappoint. As you can see, I cultured 2 Tetraselmis disks and grew some fantastic phyto in eight days. Definitely recommend!!
